The Effects of Food Insecurity

Vitamin Alliance was founded to lessen the impacts of malnutrition in Allegheny and surrounding counties. According to the Pittsburgh government, food insecurity affects 21.4% of people in Pittsburgh. Food insecurity can lead to malnutrition and an increased risk of health issues. According to the World Health Organization, poor nutrition can lead to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Why Vitamins?

Vitamin Alliance distributes vitamins to at risk individuals. Although vitamins cannot replace healthy, fulfilling food, hopefully they will lessen the impacts of malnutrition by supplementing meals with essential vitamins that individuals lack in their diets. The AARP recommends that adults and seniors over the age of 50 supplement their diet with vitamins as hormonal changes make hitting the target from nutrients from fruits, vegetables and other unprocessed foods more difficult.
